The Friday Finisher

Welcome to your quick-fire, end of week update with a few bite-sized bullet points covering what we’re learning about and loving in three areas: fitness, nutrition and mindset. One bullet from each trainer, a little nugget of health and fitness gold.

FITNESS: Hailey will knock you out!

As one of AGOGA’s boxing fanatics, Hailey has 3 perfect reasons why you need to add boxing to your training routine.

  1. Make no mistake, boxing is a total body workout. When practised correctly, boxing will activate your muscles all the way from head to toe! It’ll boost your strength and conditioning while improving your balance, coordination, agility and reaction speed.
  2. Boxing burns calories – fast! With AGOGA boxing typically including 20-30% aerobic and 70-80% anaerobic training, clients can expect to burn up to 400 calories every 30 mins. What’s more, you’ll be working on building a powerful and stable midsection; boxing is very demanding on the core as your hips need to powerfully rotate in order to get full thoracic rotation to pack a more powerful punch. Flaming through calories and training your core in one session? Yes please!
  3. Punch that stress outta here ☺ If you’ve had a long day at the office or have any daily stresses building up (you know the ones we’re talking about…), boxing will help you unload that tension and punch your way to happiness! Hitting the pads or bag will initially trigger an adrenaline release to boost the supply of oxygen and glucose to the brain and muscles, and this is often joined by the release of endorphins which will have you feeling on the top of the world.

NUTRITION: Libby is ready to experiment with food… again.

OK so we all know Lib is an avid experimenter when it comes to nutrition. Well, one of the hottest studies off the press has now suggested something that has her ready to step into experiment number 1037. A recent piece of research from the University of Surrey looked at nutrient timing for men and women before and after their workouts.

The findings suggest that men will burn more fat if they workout fasted and eat almost straight after their sessions, whereas women may burn more fat if they eat before a sweat session and hold off on refueling for awhile post-workout. Lib checked out the original study, but the reading’s a bit looonnnggg and boring, so instead have a squiz of this more entertaining rundown from Doctor Mercola and see if you’re keen to try your own experiment!

p.s. Ladies, we’re not talking about a full breakfast here for the pre-workout stuff, just a little coconut water or half a piece of fruit should do the trick!

MINDSET: Nic is picking his brain

You’re welcome… why? Because Nic knows you’ll be thanking him for the following bounty. Brain Pickings; sign up to the weekly newsletter, add it to your bookmarks, make it your homepage – do whatever you need to ensure the writing of Maria Popova remains a weekly read. Founded in 2006 as a weekly email to 7 friends, Brain Pickings now gets more than 5 million readers per month!

In her own words, Brain Pickings is Maria’s “one-woman labor of love – a subjective lens on what matters in the world and why. Mostly, it’s a record of [her] own becoming as a person — intellectually, creatively, spiritually — and an inquiry into how to live and what it means to lead a good life.” Brain Pickings is Maria’s forum for dissecting, reviewing, recommending and celebrating a multi-disciplinary treasure chest bursting with pieces spanning art, science, psychology, design, philosophy, history, politics, anthropology, and so, so much more.
